Math Where You Might Not Expect It

Instructor(s): Gove Effinger, Mathematics & Computer Science

Everyone knows that mathematics is central to the "hard sciences" like physics, engineering and chemistry, but there are many areas of human activity where math, perhaps unexpectedly, plays a very important role. In this course we shall explore the role of mathematics in art and architecture, music, digital communications, sports and even democracy! Through readings, discussions, interactions with experts in each of the areas mentioned, and individual projects and writings, students will be invited to better understand and appreciate the power of mathematics across a wide range of human endeavors.
