Course Description

Power, Protest, Embodied Resistance: The Body, Image and Identity

What is the relationship between Britney Spears, Simone Biles, and Thích Quang Duc? —Protest! Each of these cultural figures put their body on the line using protest as performance to challenge power structures, address social equity, and influence social change. Power, Protest and Embodied Resistance: The Body, Image and Identity is a research-to-practice course that examines the art and act of performance as an influential model for social activism, civil disobedience, and community mobilization. Students will delve into the works of historical and contemporary artists and cultural figures who radicalized their creative practices and careers to promote social advocacy and revolution.
