Making Things Right

This course will investigate forgiveness and reconciliation as ways of restoring peace in the midst of horrendous disruptions of it. When should we attempt to build a bridge, and when should we stand our ground? Are there better and worse ways of remembering or memorializing horrific events? What creative and novel ways of responding to violence and injustice might help us find a way past our differences? In this class, we will look at work in philosophy, history, and psychology as well as the use of memorials and art with an eye to finding creative and productive responses to disruption.
