Joel Smith, associate professor of philosophy, was the guest speaker at the April 6 鈥淭own and Gown Movie Night鈥 sponsored by Saratoga Film Forum. He spoke following a screening of the critically acclaimed 1997 Martin Scorsese movie Kundun, based on the life and writings of the 14th Dalai Lama.

Mary Zeiss Stange, professor of women鈥檚 studies and religion, was a featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Professional Outdoor Media Association March 20 in Knoxville, Tenn. With Mark Damian Duda of Responsive Management, a research firm that specializes in wildlife and conservation demographics, Stange presented a workshop on 鈥淐ommunicating about Hunting in the 21st Century.鈥 She also presented a workshop on 鈥淎ddressing the Female Voice鈥 in the hunting community.

Gordon Thompson, professor and chair, Department of Music, talked about creating his open-learning experiment鈥攁n online version of his "The Beatles: An Introduction"鈥攆or "MOOCs and Corporate Learning: Symposium and Lab" April 3 in Saratoga Springs.

Publications

Jay Rogoff, visiting assistant professor of English, has two new poems, "Olympia" and "Swanilda Waltzes," in the current issue of Hotel Amerika, Vol. 12 (Winter 2014).

Denise L. Smith, professor of health and exercise sciences, coauthored a manuscript titled 鈥淥besity and overweight associated with increased carotid diameter and decreased arterial function in young otherwise healthy men鈥 published by the American Journal of Hypertension, Vol. 27, No. 4, 2014. The research was supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the Department of Homeland Security鈥檚 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Program.
